Stapedectomy
A Stapedectomy may be performed when the condition Otosclerosis is present.
Otosclerosis is a condition that causes progressive hearing loss. The hearing loss is usually in both ears and most patients identify hearing loss during their late teenage years or early adulthood.
The operation is performed down the ear canal, usually by a small incision just in front of the ear itself. An operating microscope is used to lift the ear drum forward and open the middle ear.
The stapes is removed with special instruments. A small opening is made in the inner ear and an artificial piston prosthesis is then inserted into the hole and a crimping wire connects the piston to the remainder of the bones, namely the incus.
